Some of the health issues reported in Portuguese pointers are:
Hip dysplasia
Idiopathic seizure disorder (epilepsy)
Cardiac disorder
Cancer
Autoimmune disease
Hypothyroidism
Diabetes
Allergies
Gastric disorders
Subluxating patella
This list is not necessarily comprehensive of all health issues known to occur in Portuguese pointers nor indicative of the relative number of incidences of each disease.
This is generally a healthy, robust breed but health issues can and do occur, especially within certain pedigrees. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive database of health problems within the breed yet. The PPCA encourages breeders and owners to health screen their dogs using the guidance of the breed-specific health testing prescribed under the CHIC program. If you are considering purchasing a Portuguese pointer, please discuss health issues with any breeders you contact. A reputable breeder will very much appreciate your concern in finding a healthy puppy and be willing to share health information from their pedigrees. Always ask for proof of all health testing done.
